Shit People Say: Slang From The 1990s Until Today [Infographic]

I think I have touched this subject briefly before in some of my articles, but I haven’t really penetrated the subject to the core. It seems that the community of geeks and fans of various franchises have a need to come up with words that become the slang for a whole generation. It’s been going on for decades now, and as we all know, it’s not going to stop anytime soon. They are words that usually mean something else, but they are put into another context to become a trendy way of saying things. I don’t know if that way of explaining it makes any sense at all, but it’s the only way I know to put it.

Words like baller, swag and OMG were trending words on pretty much every website when they were at their highest peak of usage, but there is a timeline to follow here. It’s a timeline that clearly outlines the trendy word of any given period, and it’s quite interesting to look at actually. Even though it was somewhat a word of the ’90s, I use “crunked” as a way of hinting that something is broken or bad. It’s a twist on the word “crunk” with a backwards meaning.

There are of course millions of these words out there that haven’t hit the masses just yet. The words you are familiar with also depend on where you live in the world. It has been said that the reason we do this is because we want to alter the boring use of the words in order to make our own perception of them or ourselves come across a little bit cooler or hipper. Whether this is true or not, I don’t know. One thing is for sure, and that is that we will see countless more of these kinds of words in the future. It’s one of the things that make something go viral on websites and social networking services after all. It’s just how we operate it seems. You dig? (Created by Skybox Creative)
