Crazy Creative and Clever Cassette Tape Art

Remember cassette tapes from way back when? I’m so young that I can barely remember those (cough cough), but I have a vague recollection.

This completely rad artist, Erika Iris Simmons, uses old cassette tapes and VCR tapes to create fabulous artwork. The creativity here is jumping off the page. She says, “In this series I showcase a number of portraits of musicians made out of recycled cassette tapes with the original cassette… The idea comes from a philosopher’s (Ryle) description of how your spirit lives in your body. I imagine we are all, like cassettes, thoughts wrapped up in awkward packaging.”

Erika is from right here in Atlanta, and if you would like to learn more about her, you can read this detailed article in Women’s Day. Most of the cassettes she uses for her artwork are donated or they have been thrown away. What a wonderful example of recycled art! You can check out her Flickr set here.
