When I first heard that the Smart Car from Mercedes-Benz didn’t make too big of an impact in the US, I was really surprised. It’s such a great car, and parking is a breeze no matter how you look at it. A friend of mine bought a Smart Car a while ago. When I sat in it, I must say that even though you don’t get that claustrophobic feeling that you might expect, I was going over in my mind how in the world that small car would perform in a car accident. It wasn’t exactly a pleasant feeling knowing that if we were to be hit by a larger car (which of course aren’t exactly hard to find), we would be vacuum-packed like fish sticks.
Recently the annual L.A. Design Challenge was held, and even though the contest was not entirely about designing the car of the future, I suspect that this year’s winner had a lot of that going for it. The winner was of course Mercedes-Benz with their new concept car called the Mercedes-Benz Smart 341 Parkour. If you thought you had seen it all, think again because this car concept is nothing like what you have seen before.
In the future cars will apparently park upright, have glass enclosed bubble cockpits, and a whole lot of geeky design features that only the most seasoned car lover will enjoy and hold dear. I have to admit though that I completely love the cartoonish drawings that showcase this new idea from Mercedes-Benz. However, when it comes to the look of the car itself, I might have to know the technical details of it before I can tell people to buy it. Unique? Hell yeah! Safe? God knows…
