How To: Save a Smell | Like Taking A Picture Of A Smell

We can take pictures that will last a lifetime. We can shoot video that will cheer up even the darkest of days. But until now, we haven’t been able to save a smell (a scent). Smells usually trigger thoughts connected to the smell and can take us back to the place we were at in an instance in your thoughts. Many different ideas have been tried throughout the years and one of them has been to add smells in theaters for example. It hasn’t been that big of a success, but maybe now with the whole 3D formatted movies becoming the ultimate experience maybe this will change as well.

The designer, Studio Kawamura Ganjavian, has developed a small size version of the “Smell Collector” which could possibly be of interest for all you smelling fanatics out there. To me it just resembles a scientist’s field kit, but who am I to judge, right?

When I see the pictures I instantly start seeing memories from my Chemistry classes where these kinds of containers were used. The idea in itself is quite cool, but I don’t know how long the smells will be present in those things. The holes in the small vials make up for a great deal of air coming into them. My first question is, will the smell will get weaker the longer you keep these around? Maybe I am entirely off here, but it seems the air does its thing to “dry up” any smell that you collect. But I could be wrong of course.

Included is also a Bellow to make sure you can get the smell out of the vial right into your nose and to tickle your senses and trigger some fond memories. The concept is called “Scenter” and there is no word on if or when it will be released… but when it does, then smell it, remember it!
