TweetingSeat: The Park Bench That Twitpics & Tweets You

We see Twitter and Facebook products and designs pop up all over the Internet everyday. Most of the time they are obviously weak attempts by uninformed and social media starved marketers simply trying to capitalize on our obsession with Twitter and Facebook. Here is a perfect example; today I saw a clock that didn’t have anything to do with Twitter being called the “Twitter Clock.” Wth?

When I first stumbled upon this “tweeting seat,” I rolled my eyes and thought it was one of those ridiculous half-baked ideas. However, once I read about the concept and learned more about it, I realized how much I like this! I wouldn’t mind having one of these here in Atlanta. Let me explain how it works.

Designer Christopher McNicholl says he created the tweetingseat “for people and communities to form their own relationship with the object through the way in which they choose to use it.” In other words, it combines our digital life and our physical life by tweeting a picture of us while we are sitting on the bench and tweeting. It’s a super simple concept really. It has two cameras. One camera is mounted on the bench and captures the area around the bench. The second camera is located in a tree nearby and is pointed at the bench itself. It twitpics people sitting there tweeting.

Some people are once again waving the privacy flag with this one, but I don’t really see that as a problem. I mean, if you don’t want your pic taken and tweeted, don’t sit on the bench. How’s that for a solution? I really only see two challenges with this. First of all, the pictures I’ve seen @tweetingseat tweet are way too small and low quality. Someone needs to hook a couple of iPhones up in that badboy instead of whatever cameras are being used. And secondly, Chris, if you want to get some action going on that Twitter account and create a buzz about this, you are going to have to follow people back (I noticed you aren’t). If you don’t, you are going to be in for a much more difficult journey since your whole concept is wrapped around Twitter. #justsayin Overall, I give this a thumbs up!
