Great post. The points you make are so pertinent. I’ve been astounded by the depth and breadth of work available under cc licenses, not least the outstanding recommendations of @thomasraukamp on Twitter (editor of Germany’s “Beat” magazine.

If you’re new to free and legal music, you should follow Thomas or run a search on Twitter / Google for “netlabels”. Some netlabels are beginning to charge for music, but you won’t be low on choice.

It’s a point I’ve made on Twitter many times and I’ll make it again here. Thomas Raukamp has overhauled my iTunes library and I’m ever grateful for his daily recommendations.

Labels like PublicSpacesLab are changing the landscape. They, and their artists are providing the true musical innovation. Support them by promoting them whenever you download a track. Tweet, retweet, @reply and if the label / artist is following you on Twitter, send them a DM too showing your appreciation. As a netlabel artist, the direct contact with listeners is HUGELY important for me.

Especially, do this on a Monday! Make a note of tracks you want to tell the world about, give the artist and label a namecheck and include a link to the download. Spread the word, enjoy the free music and support the labels / artists who share their work. #MusicMonday
