Photography: What Would You Take If Your House Was On Fire?

The Burning House Project

I know this is a horrible thought, but if your house was on fire and you only had time to grab a few things before you got out, what would you take? It’s a classic question really, and I’ve thought about it many times. Aside from animals of course, I would take my iPhone, my laptop, my son’s artwork, my Montblanc pen (which is sentimental, I’ve had it for over a decade) and my childhood bible. How about you?

According to Robert Holden, the creator of the project you see below, “It’s a conflict between what’s practical, valuable and sentimental. What you take reflects your interests, background and priorities. Think of it as an interview condensed into one question.

These photographs below show what certain people would take. You can visit The Burning House to see many more submissions along with the names, locations and details about each photograph. It’s interesting to me to see all the different perspectives. I’m surprised how many people chose shoes. As much as I love my shoes, they wouldn’t make it to my most important things list. One thing is for sure, Apple’s gadgets sure make the list for a lot of people, including me.
