Exotic Dancers From The 1890s: A Beauty Redefined

exotic-dancers-from-1800s

I have so much to say about this, I don’t even know where to start. The women in these photographs, who were exotic dancers in the 1890s, look so badass to me. They look like they own what they do, and their confidence shines through in these pictures. This is ironic on so many levels when compared to today.

Men, I know you might be wondering why some of them have insanely tiny waists. It’s because they are wearing corsets, which are like torture chambers. I’ve tried them. Not good. Well, unless you aren’t a fan of breathing. The thing I noticed most is that the women look happy even though they are overweight. Or are they? Our standards these days when it comes to weight is so skewed.

Women with thighs this size would never be hired as exotic dancers in today’s society. I also noticed that these pictures were from the pre-stiletto era. I’m reminded of the time I worked at Hooters back in the day. One night my manager came up to me and said, “It would be great if you could lose ten pounds.” I said, “yes, sir” and I practically starved myself for two weeks until I lost it. Even though the women in these pictures didn’t have to deal with today’s unforgiving standards when it comes to weight, don’t mistake that for an easy life. After all, they didn’t have iPhones, iPads, social media or even automatic dishwashers. Nah, I’d still rather live today even with all the pressure to stay thin. Oh, and what’s up with the woman dressed as a horse? Hmm…
