Twitter | Rest In Peace, We’ll Miss You

03/25/2010 - 5:00 am By Diana Adams

This article has my name listed as the author, but really, the smart and savvy @CtKscribe is responsible for all this fabulousness. In her own words, she is known as the Queen of Ball Busting on Twitter, but I like to think of her as a delicate flower, a Twitter princess. ;)

On the eve of Twitter’s 4th Birthday, as we were all reminiscing about what Twitter means to us, @CtKscribe had one of her great ideas. We got together and asked some of our friends to momentarily consider a website’s worst moment, its demise.

Can you imagine life with no Twitter? Wouldn’t it be strange? After all, what would we spend all day doing? I can’t even remember my life before Twitter.

What will happen on that dark internet day when Twitter ceases to exist, leaving a gaping hole in cyberspace? Luckily it hasn’t happened, but we wanted to know amidst the terrific birthday cheer, “If Twitter died today, what would be its 140 character Obituary?”

Each of the tweeters below mourned in their own way.
How would you write Twitter’s obituary?

@mayhemstudios @mayhemstudios from Los Angeles, California

“Hello? Anyone there? lol”

@andysowards @andysowards from Lynchburg, Virginia

“Twitter found dead, overdose of RT’s & DM Spam. Memorial will b held today @ 1:40PM. In other news, Facebook Traffic Breaks records!”

“Here lies Twitter, a blue bird that never could relate with whales. Going out to sea was not a bright idea.”

Our top story today – Twitter has finally falling in traffic to a flatline of zero. Many wonder what will happen next in this micro-blogging realm.

In other news – Justin Bieber is finally off the Trending Topics list.

A “flatline of zero” haha, excellent. You and @krsytynchong [see above] seem to have a thing for Justin Bieber… I’ll follow suit soon after I figure out who the hell that is. Thanks for the Obit Richard.

I hear over and over again and again I don’t Get Twitter ? Those People Don’t Get Much they only live in their Egg Shell, They have little or no imagination, Their Pendulum does not swing , They don’t like anything new and are stuck in a rut. A Good twitter’r has a good attitude, is Enlightening in their own right and they share that. As Steel Sharpens Steel Twitters Sharpen fellow followers. Regardless of subject matter. My IQ shot up 50 points on Twitter with the Quotes, Jokes, News, and Entertainment The Four food groups of the Brain.

[Reply]

CTK1 Reply:

What is this you’re going on about? Egg shells and such? Ah yes, my friend, you speak a wiseness. I remember when I first joined Twitter, I was the I don’t get it person you talk about. I said to myself, “What the hell am I doing this for?” I was at a loss on why I should broadcast my sandwich ingredients to the world. Or worse, pretend I had a sandwich full of ingredients and cram all of them into 140.

But when I got hired multiple times to start Twitter accounts for various companies I realized, “Hot damn, this place is cool” then rushed back to a personal account and have loved it ever since.

I hear ya Jerry,
“My IQ shot up 50 points on Twitter with the Quotes, Jokes, News, and Entertainment The Four food groups of the Brain.”

The day that Twitter (or any great site) ceases to be is due to it not being relevant or useful anymore (except unusual cases). So, the day that Twitter is gone will be no big deal because by that time we will have all moved on to the thing that replaces it.

[Reply]

CTK1 Reply:

Bryan stop being so rational and smarty pants brained! Pfffft. You’re correct though, how could it die if it’s still loved, used and abused by people and robot spammers? Then again, odder things have happened. Thing is, if it dies before its time I bet Kanye West will have something to do with it.

Twitter will never die. It may morph into something better, but it will never die. Think of it in terms of a brick and mortar library.

We’ve always had the New York Public Library. The hidden little gems and cool tidbits of information have been there all along, accessible to anyone who does the work to dig for them. But now there is a crowd of cool kids out front sharing their secrets and telling the world about all the obscure, cool stuff that they’ve found hidden away in there. And they are making that obscure information available with the click of a mouse button.

Or think of Twitter in terms of academic writing. A few years ago, we read academic journals and scientific papers and then spent days tracking down the references and footnotes and making photocopies. Now we click links.

What Twitter represents is a better system for sharing information by an order or two of magnitude. No matter what we call it – Twitter or something else – we are never going back, and it will never go away.

[Reply]

CTK1 Reply:

Woah Dave! You will be main speaker at the Twitter funeral.

The final words

are moving. Very nice. Very nice. I like a lot.

Twitter was nothing more than an EGO TRIP. It makes you feel good watching your numbers of follower grew. However, I quickly found out many friendship here are rather superficial. People want to follow you mainly for Marketing purposes. The conversation are short (140 words, and not much insight). In the end, Twitter has become a magnet for Marketing/Spamming and very little real interaction among real people. I’d closed all my Twitter account this year and joined Facebook. I fear Twitter may well become the new Myspace, which was plague by ADS and spams as well :(
