Do you know how to speak Twitter? It makes sense that with only 140 characters, there would be a need to create some shortcuts, but with all the new abbreviations popping up every day, I think it is becoming more of a dialect. (They are technically called acronyms, not abbreviations)

Just the other day someone tweeted me with IMHO in the tweet. What the heck does that mean? How does someone figure that stuff out? I remember it took me a month to learn that TY stands for thank you. I know… duh!

If you are new on Twitter, I’m about to save you a whole bunch of time and shorten your learning curve a lot. I made this master list of 35 Twitter abbreviations for us to share. I’m sure there may be some I’ve forgotten, so please leave them in a comment below.

Dear Charlotte,

Guess what? Some people do use LOL for ‘lots of love’. But, the majority of people use it for ‘laughing out loud’. So, you can continue to email your husband lol. <3

Best Wishes,

Y’know I was about to say the say thing. The vast majority of these are old Internet acronyms: http://www.gaarde.org/Acronyms/ — another great reference is http://www.netlingo.com/

Hello old dude,

You know what is sooo funny about your comment? As I was writing this article I was thinking about how most of these are old text acronyms, but you aren’t the old one.. I think it is me.. I have never gotten into texting – ever. LOL Yeah, I know, I’ve been living in a cave I suppose. Haha!!

I’d like to add LMHO – Laughing My Heart Out. My 10 yr old son said it one night & I shared it with my friends on Twitter. We all use it consistently & I’ve seen it used by new friends.

This is a FABULOUS list for someone who types with only two fingers and a thumb for the shift-key (me). Thank you, Oh, I mean TY. I’ll pass it on because RT’s are easier for me b/c I have to type less.
<3,I really like that one!

A couple more prevalent ones are AFK for “away from keys” and BRB for “be right back” so others know not to expect an immediate reply.

IIRC = If I recall correctly

TTFN = Ta-ta for now

A quick way to figure out any of those is simply put “define:ttfn” (or whichever) in google.

I’m smh because you left this one out…

smh = shaking my head

Actually there is an online converter that will do any txtspeak jargon to English. IMHO, this one http://bit.ly/8mUV3T is the best & most accurate out there. TTFN!

Malik,

let it say as simply as the list is.. It sucks..
Reason: this is not twitter abbreviations, actually there is just 3-4 of twibbreviations.. what about other 30? they are common in new age communications for year.. sms,email,irc.. sooo.. Let’s back to the point. This list sucks. cheers

[Reply]

The above comment needs to type legible english so we can understand the wee pee pee syndrome going on in between the two statements that “this sucks”.

An abbreviation w/some definition 4 u:

L to the Z to the R = Loser. n. Inept person who doesn’t respect the keyboard he slobbers on.

I hope you peek back in, ewoks and on slight chance that you do I’mma leave an abbreviation for you:

ZipIT = if you don’t have anything nice or constructive to comment about then don’t bother. Just STFU.

IMO or IMHO (FWIW), unless you’re FTF some of the best ways to communicate are thru DM, EM, FB and LI.

Let’s not forget Twitter, it’s Gr8. You should see my BG b/c I inserted a custom photo that I took IRL. BTW take a look, LMK what you think. NP if you don’t have time right now.

BFN, J/K LOL

OMG PLZ tell me you’re not ROFL. WTF, if you like what I’m sayin TMB or RT me. In advance RTHX.

Is this TMI? OMFG I’m LMBO I mean LMAO. I <3 this stuff. TTYS.

You're probably like WTH, now I have to say TY? YW

Hmmmm. As a twitter illiterate, I was hoping for some twitter specific definitions. This is really just a list of commonly used web acronyms (the same ones we’ve been using for nearly 20 years now in chat rooms, forums, message boards, instant messaging, MMOs, etc.)

I mean, really? You are a tech specialist and you didn’t know what IMHO stood for?

[Reply]

Diana Adams Reply:

Hi Jeremy,

I really did not know what IMHO stood for. Somehow I missed that whole instant message/chat room/text thing. Nothing has made me feel like I’ve been living in a cave more than reading the comments on this post. LOL But it’s all good, I’ve got it now! Thank you for your comment.

Your story referring to this good topic is perfectly done and a lot of scholars would use that for their publish dissertation. But some of people still use the support of the thesis writing service.

Thanks Diana. This is Gr8. I remember the first time a client put in an email LOL, I thought I wonder if he knows it means “Lots of Love”….of course, I was the one that laughed out loud when I realized what he was communicating. While I believe he “loves” the service I give him, I learned quickly we were both LOL!!

This articel would have been better if the abbreviations were categorized into those that have arisen just on twitter, such as RT and those that are have been in common use for years on message boards and text.

Technically an abbreviation is not an acronym unless it’s a pronouncable word e.g. RADAR and NASA and LOL are acronyms; RT and TMI are not. I have heard people pronounce ROFL but when saying OMG they always say each letter individually so that doesn’t count as an acronym.
