Twitter App | Peek Into the Bedroom of Your Favorite Tweeple

03/20/2010 - 9:00 am By Diana Adams

This article is about a goofy little Twitter app that was recently released and introduced to me by @CTK1 and @mayhemstudios. It’s so addictive and fun, so of course, I have to share it with you.

One of the most delicious aspects of Twitter is that it makes being a stalker not only fun, but socially acceptable. We can secretly watch people we are curious about and get a truly intimate look into their lives, their thoughts and their attitudes.

This app allows us to take our covert prying and spying one step further. http://www.sleepingtime.org, developed by @labnol, pinpoints with surprising accuracy what hours we sleep. According to the site, “Our algorithm will determine the approximate sleeping schedule based on the time when he or she stays least active on Twitter.”

At first, I thought that since this app assumes the time we spend off Twitter is always spent sleeping, it would have to be inaccurate, although based on all the reactions seen on http://www.labnol.org (a few of them included below), apparently it’s correct a lot of the time. According to that site, “the algorithm uses the timestamp of the last 500 or so updates of a Twitter user to calculate his or her sleeping time.”

For me, it says that I sleep between 9pm and 3am. It’s true that I usually get up around 3am and get on my computer, which means I’m on Twitter; however, I don’t usually don’t go to sleep as early as 9pm. I’m off my computer by then though, so I can see why it thinks I’m sleeping.

When you start putting in the usernames of your Twitter favorites into this app, watch out, you’ll get sucked in and waste a lot of time. Yep, this goes on the guilty pleasures list for sure!

Mine says I sleep when I am actually at my busiest time at work (i.e. when I’m too busy to tweet) :)

I’m with Sharon! I think a protest is in order. This new site is off kilter and destroying our reps as professionals. Actually it was fairly accurate for me. Sorry Sharon, you’ll have to stand alone and fight the power solo.

Hey Diana, it seems there is no end to the fun as well as the serious sides of Twitter. And no end to how much you rock. You rock it hard… keep it up!

Well, it pegged me true; I fall at midnight and rise at seven if I’m not working (big “if,” though).

I wish Twitter had as many users as Facebook so that fun apps like these could give a fairly accurate snapshot of almost any demographic.

Thank you, Diana and Christina! Y’all both rock it hard.

I am with Sharon. The app says that I take rest when I am actually at school, taking down lectures. Nevertheless, great work by Amit.

Ya, it was accurate with me too. Now I’m wondering how the underbelly of society is going to use this information to… say, steal our cars or plan a home invasion? When I was a cab driver, one “criminal type” told me “I know where you sleep…” Now, that was creepy. How creepy would it me if some creep said, “I know WHEN you sleep…”? SO, naturally the next question has to be, is there a way to block these apps?

Just wondering. :D
