Trexels: 235 Star Trek Characters In Awesome Pixelations

Trexels Star Trek Pixilated Characters

I think it’s safe to say that everyone will agree when I argue that Star Trek is probably the most influential science fiction TV show ever created. Not even the Star Wars franchise can measure up to its impact on society, and the gadgets we are drooling over today. I have to admit though, as a young kid I was more mesmerized by the Star Wars movies than the Star Trek series, but that has slightly shifted as I have grown up.

If we were to list all the gadgets that have drawn inspiration from the Star Trek series, I would have to sit here all day long. However, if I were to mention one simple example, it would be the flip phone. In Star Trek it was called the “communicator,” and it was a design that was later adopted by the cell phone manufacturers. At the time, the flip phone was a huge success. Soon though it had to make room for the cell phone formats that we have and enjoy today; and therefore, it became less popular.

As you can see there is a lot to celebrate when it comes to Star Trek, and I think the franchise will only grow bigger with time. Maybe we’ll have to make room on Bit Rebels for more future Star Trek stuff. Another way to honor the Star Trek phenomenon is to do what designer John Martz did. He decided it was due time for a true pixelation of some of the characters, and he quickly started working on it. 235 pixelated characters later and the final poster was completed. It’s a true masterpiece that I would surely put up at the office if I could get my hands on one. There is a limited number of 300 prints being created, so in order to get one, you need to get moving fast.

The poster is called “Trexels” (Trek and Pixels put together), and it will debut at the MoCCA Festival in New York City, April 9th and 10th, 2011. You can win a print if you are the one who can successfully guess all the different characters’ names and put them in order. The one with the most correct guesses will win a print. I figure @JeriLRyan (Seven of Nine in Star Trek: Voyager) has a pretty good chance of pinning down every one of these, so if you read this, go for it! If you have no place to put it over at your house, then we here at Bit Rebels would be perfectly alright housing it for you. #WishfulThinking
