If you love studying space and the universe as much as I do, then you are going to think this is the Holy Grail. The only thing better than this would be to actually take a space flight. The six minute film below, which was made by Hayden Planetarium, shows the entire known universe. Trust me; you’ve never seen anything like this before, ever. As this video reads, “Every single satellite, moon, planet, star and galaxy is represented to scale and is in its correct, measured location according to the best scientific research to date.” Wow!

According to YouTube, “Everything seen in the film is possible because of the world’s most complete four-dimensional map of the universe, the Digital Universe Atlas, that is maintained and updated by astrophysicists at the American Museum of Natural History. This new film is part of an exhibition at the Rubin Museum of Art in Manhattan through May 2010.”

When I watched this, I was in complete awe. According to Popular Science, “The observable universe spans 13.7 billion light years, with the background radiation aftershock of the Big Bang as the oldest, and farthest, signal. At that end of the universe lies the oldest material in creation, which, thanks to billions of years of expansion, has accelerated to almost the speed of light. That layer forms an event horizon past which not even light can travel, ringing our universe in what is essentially an inside out black hole.” You can learn more specifics about how this film was created by visiting the website for the American Museum of Natural History here.

I love stuff like this. It truly put things in perspective. And when some people say that we’re the only ones around. It makes you think. My first and only thought is the famous saying -”What an awful waste of space!” ;)

I saw this get tweeted a few weeks ago but just had to watch it again. It really is amazing. Like Richard, it amazes me that some people still think we are alone in this universe. Our little planet is nothing compared to what’s really out there.

Absolutely beautiful video. It put our meagre planet into some sort of context with our greater surroundings.
I suggested to my wife (Jill) that she may care to use this youtube video as an educational tool at the primary school at which my wife teaches. That is of course providing it doesn’t breach/infringe any copyright laws.

It does seem like an awfully huge place! Considering all the different ways different circumstances can arise, there must be plenty of life out there!!!
