Let’s visit the retro for a moment. As a matter of fact, let’s visit the Lego retro world for a moment and compare it to today. It’s not so hard to see that the Lego builds today are infinitely more intricate than they were in the old days. When you walk into a toy store today, you almost miss the Lego shelves just because the pictures and the advertising for the different Lego builds look like ordinary board games since their construction is so detailed. There are smaller pieces and all kinds of gears, power and amazing blocks that make the creations look like any ordinary toy you might stumble over.
Back in 1989, it was a different story though. Bring today’s builds back in time, and you would win any contest ever held. It’s really amazing how far Lego has come in the last 20 years. Just have a look at the top notch builds of 1989 and marvel over the geekiness of them. According to the opinions of many Lego extraordinaires, they were created using the ordinary, unusable blocks that today are only used when there are no other alternatives.
Take this Christmas build package dating back to 1989 for example. Those are epic micro builds that anyone today would consider to be the work of a 4 year old’s imagination. But we have to remember that back then, there were just no other blocks that could achieve what we can build today. This thing would get the crowning position in my collection of Lego builds (if I had one) just because it is so darn awesome. This is the top of the pops when it comes to geekiness in my book. Period!
