On Twitter, one of the most Re Tweeted on social media  news and information is the ones that are  tweeted by @mashable .  But have you ever wondered who is the guy behind @mashable? Well, he is Pete Cashmore. Working as a web technology consultant in mid 2005, Pete Cashmore founded Mashable from an unlikely location: a small town in the north of Scotland.

Focusing on up-to-the-minute news on social networks and new websites, it rapidly grew to be one of the top 10 blogs in the world according to the blog ranking service Technorati. The site’s writers have been quoted in The New York Times, The Washington Post and hundreds of technology publications. Pete was selected as a Top 25 Forbes Web Celeb in 2007, while Mashable was chosen as a must-read site by both Fast Company and PC Magazine. In mid 2007, BusinessWeek featured Mashable as one of the world’s most profitable blogs.

Pete divides his time between San Francisco, the UK and technology events around the US, including Mashable meetups in Los Angeles and New York.

For those who do not know yet, What is Mashable? Founded in July 2005, Mashable is the world’s largest blog focused exclusively on Web 2.0 and Social Media news. With more than 10 million monthly pageviews, Mashable is the most prolific blog reviewing new Web sites and services, publishing breaking news on what’s new on the web and offering social media resources and guides. Mashable’s audience includes early adopters, social media enthusiasts, entrepreneurs, influencers, brands and corporations, marketing, PR and advertising agencies, Web 2.0 aficionados and technology journalists. Mashable is also popular with bloggers, Twitter and Facebook users — an increasingly influential demographic.

Some interesting trivia:

@mashable now has 1,449,527 followers on twitter

Pete Cashmore has more than 5,000 friends on facebook

There are a total of 11 mashable contributors (editors, writers, assoc editors)

If you are not following then he is a must to follow.  He is one dude that really got me interested in learning more about twitter, blogging and social media.

Thanks, Misty, for showing us a little bit of the man behind the curtain of Mashable! Had the pleasure of saying a quick “hello” to Pete after a recent Mashable event in Tribeca. It was great to see Pete easily mingle with the crowd after the formal presentations, graciously making time to speak to the many who were eager to meet “The Man Behind @Mashable.”

Mashable events travel — if they come near you, go! They are cutting-edge social media and, the man behind it all, does a find job of being “social!”

Love this “where are they now” – VH1 stylestyle nostalgia. Obviously, @mashable did some interesting things – even if that’s so last week. =P

BitRebels is where it’s at. And that’s the here and now.

And maybe that’s why the history lesson about @mashable is important. It’s good to know how it started. It might give us a clue about where we are going and what will be relevant tomorrow.
