Why Superman And Wonder Woman Should Split Up

In somewhat recent news, DC announced the super-coupling of Superman and Wonder Woman, and quite frankly, I am a little peeved by this. This is not just an ordinary geek rant. I am legitimately upset with the lack of creativity that DC has when it comes to their newly established power couple. While Superman and Wonder Woman have hooked up in past editions released from DC, the New 52 is supposedly a new and improved universe for comic readers. Since this relationship has been done so many times before, why is it so different now? In what direction will this couple go that they have not gone before?

I am by no means a guru when it comes to the DC universe, but I am a reader. I enjoy the essence of conflict, especially when it comes to the lives of comic heroes. I am in no way on board with this Superman and Wonder Woman smash up. So, like any geek who wants to voice his opinion, I am going to make a prediction that hopefully comes into fruition. I am going to predict the downfall of the super-couple. I am not simply predicting a break up either. This relationship is nothing like a High School Musical. This will be a breakup of epic proportion that only comic readers and thespians can enjoy and appreciate the most. I predict that either Superman or Wonder Woman will practice infidelity.

Think about it. This is the best option for a Hollywood-style conflict. I do not, in any way, condone cheating on your other half. Since these are fictional characters however, have at it. Infidelity is an act of human beings. Characters like Superman and Wonder Woman are models of outstanding moral character and “god-like.” If either of them cheats on the other, readers will rethink their views on these upstanding model heroes.

Superman is the golden boy of the DC universe. If Superman ever cheated on Wonder Woman, this would not only tarnish the record of the Super Boy Scout, it would be devastating to heroes within the universe of comics. If Superman wasn’t the most trusting hero in the DC universe, would his word be held as high as it is now? I doubt Superman is going to engage in a sex-capade like Barney Stinson, but Superman is still a man.

A man can be swayed by the slight touch of a woman that finds him funny or interesting. So, why not Superman? PLUS, Superman should be swayed by a mortal woman. If Superman is compromised by any woman, it has to be someone who he doesn’t compete with in the office. Wonder Woman is too intimidating for a guy like Superman I think. Granted there is no Lois Lane, but I’m sure Geoff Johns can come up with somebody to take on this responsibility.

Let’s focus on Wonder Woman for a second. Wonder Woman is nowhere near the same caliber as Superman when it comes to moral high ground. In fact, Wonder Woman did kill a villain with her bare hands. I believe that if Wonder Woman was to be the cause of the breakup, she should cheat on him with a hero of far lesser value – A hero even the Justice League cannot take seriously. Aquaman. In a previous issue, Aquaman and Wonder Woman were supposed to marry. This storyline never completely committed to the relationship, and it seemed more like an arranged marriage than anything else.

So, why Aquaman? Aquaman is not respected by most comic readers. Aquaman has been the butt of every fish joke in existence. Aquaman is not really cool. BUT, if Aquaman defied the golden boy of the air and took his girl from him with just his charm then Aquaman would be elevated to pimp status. I would respect Aquaman more for being a cheating home wrecker than King of the Ocean. Aquaman could become a fish stick with just a glare from Superman’s lazer retinas, and he’s macking the Son of Krypton’s girl?! Way to go Arthur Curry! Let’s face it. DC needs to get their act together and produce some real conflict, especially if they are going to do a battle with a Stan the Man. What do you think of the DC mash up?
