When I read about this, I admit, I was intrigued yet convinced it couldn’t possibly be true. However, I’ve looked at the evidence and apparently it is true. On a primitive and biological level, women are attracted to the smell of men’s armpits.

Men, this does not mean it is suddenly acceptable to go for days without showering, we aren’t talking about the rank odor of sweaty B.O. here, we are talking about the natural male odor that emits from a man’s armpit.

According to a study by a US research team which was elaborated on by the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, women are physically “calmed” by the smell.

According to http://www.abc.net, “Male sweat contains one or more chemical signaling compounds, known as pheromones, that can affect both a woman’s state of mind and her reproductive hormone levels.”

They conducted this study by exposing women to cotton balls with male sweat on them, masked by fragrance. After six hours, the women reported that they felt relaxed and calm. I can’t help but think maybe they were just lightheaded from having a smelly cotton ball at their nose for six hours.

In all fairness to this study, they did continue the experiment over several months with several groups of women and many male sweat specimens. They even went on to concur that, “…the scent of a male partner might not only help to trigger ovulation at the right time but may make women more relaxed and receptive to sex as well.”

What this says to me is that love is a lot more about chemistry than we realize!

This is a good read. Slightly disturbing and fascinating at the same time.

Did the study say anything about how it affects women who are attracted to other females? I wonder how they find the scent. Is it appealing or revolting to them?
