Laser Cut Retro 8-Bit Space Invaders Chess Set Will Make You Drool

What do you get when you combine the 8-bit Space Invader geekiness we remember from the arcades in the 80s with a classic chess game? You get a dream come true for a lot of people. This Space invader game is a stunning masterpiece of design, and I can’t imagine anyone not wanting one of these chess sets. It is all laser cut from acrylic, which is what gives it that shiny, smooth look.

This is a project that started out on Kickstarter 7 days ago with a goal of raising $5,000. With 21 days left, they’ve accumulated over 200% of their goal, and at the time I’m writing this, they’re at $11,477.

They created this by using an Epilog laser to laser cut each one of the original Space Invaders arcade game characters. Then they laser cut “snap in” bases so each one of those characters can stand up on its own. Last but not least, they laser cut and etched the actual chess board itself. You are basically looking at the classic Space Invader pixels recreated in laser cut acrylic.

Each character has a small marking on near the bottom to note which classic chess piece that Space Invaders character represents. The chess board is made of interlocking pieces, so it can be taken apart and put back together easily in order to be transported or stored. This Kickstarter campaign even made the “staff picks” list on the first day it launched.

I would be very interested in interviewing someone from NMILaser to get their top tips for creating a successful Kickstarter campaign, but my guess is, a lot of it comes down to having a project that the community really accepts and can relate to in one way or another. This one definitely does that!
