How To: Create Your Own Luck

09/23/2009 - 1:00 am By Diana Adams

My mother has always said to me, “You are so lucky. Everything you do always works out perfectly.” I started wondering, “Am I really that lucky?” The answer of course is no.

I do think; however, that it is possible to create your own luck. Creating luck involves being creative and open. It means leaving no stone unturned and opening yourself to all the possibilities that the universe puts in your path.

I agree with this quote from Oprah Winfrey “I feel that luck is preparation meeting opportunity.”

Here are 5 tips for creating some great luck for yourself:

1. Learn to talk to anyone. Yep. Anyone. It sounds small, but that one simple habit can change your life. Whether on Twitter or in “real life,” once you master this skill, you will realize that at any moment you can go out into the world and meet new people, build friendships, learn new things, even grow your business.

2. Never burn bridges. It has taken me many years to be able to type that with confidence. I had to learn that sometimes it is more important to smile and nod than to be right. Pick your battles carefully because you never know when your path will cross with that person again.

3. Recognize divine appointments. Have you ever accidentally mis-dialed a phone number and noticed that the person you randomly called seemed fun to talk to? Have you ever met one person and because of that meeting, the course of your entire life changed? I call those divine appointments. I no longer believe that the people that come across our paths are random. Everyone is in our space for a reason.

4. Always be open to new opportunities, personally and professionally. Follow your intuition. If you aren’t growing or creating anymore in your current capacity, and if your intuition is leading you in another direction, don’t fight it. Sometimes I meet young people that say, “My degree is in accounting. I am only interested in applying for accounting positions.” Meanwhile, they’ve been unemployed for six months. By being so rigid, the most perfect career in the world might pass them by because they weren’t willing to even look into it.

5. Hang out with other lucky people. Mark Victor Hansen always says that we are the product of the five people we hang out with most. If that’s true, then hang out with lucky people. It will rub off on you! Run away from negative people like you are running away from a burning building.

Be brave, it will get your adrenaline pumping. You know the saying – If you’re not living on the edge, you’re taking up too much space!

I think that is when you know you’ve tapped into a true passion. Whatever that thing may be, if you could do it all day or night long, lose track of time, ‘wake up’ ten hours later, and still thirst for more, that is a passion, and I feel like I’ve found that in my writing.” Diana also spends many hours each week assisting the homeless men and women in Atlanta. To piggyback on #5, I’ve heard the phrase “you will earn within 10% of your friends’ income.” So who do you hang out with? Same concept with hanging out with “lucky” people.

Nice post, I agree with all your points.. I think luck is about 20% and the rest is really hard work and divine intervention when it comes to fulfilling ones dreams and aspirations. Wonderful share here! Thanks Diana! Beautiful piece as always.

Lucky in this case is synonymous with successful. Who are the people within your circle that are doing well and making moves? Those are the people you want to surround yourself with. But you are right…it is easier to find negative people. But its quality over quantity. Weed them out and you’ll attract people who are more in line with you.

I hold the same opinion Oprah does about luck… LOL

I agree with much of what you said however, sometimes there are bridges that have to be burned and number 5, I’m not going to choose my friends by what benefit I hope to gain from them.

I don’t depend on luck for success, I believe it comes from hard work, drive, determination and ingenuity.

As someone who actually knows Diana personally, I can attest that she has ALWAYS created her own luck. These 5 things also come from an out-of-the-box thinker that can truly make a difference elevating the luck factor in her readers. Well done!

Btw, I heard an amazing quote that reminded me of your quote from Oprah. “Ambition without initiative is merely daydreaming.”

I have no idea where it came from but I thought it was worth shoplifting.

Aaaaahhhhhh, love it!

Diana,
I believe we create our reality and luck is included in that. I agree with all of your points and want to expand on one of them… “Learn to talk to anyone”

In fact, share your goals enthusiastically with everyone you come across. I have lost count of the number of opportunities that have come from sharing a small piece of what I was looking to achieve with someone new. You never know who’s going to have the key to the next step in achieving your dreams.

Keep smiling,
Darren
