Fascinating Doomsday Bunker Design

05/11/2010 - 1:00 am By Diana Adams

This article will nicely feed into all the 2012 paranoia. After all the science fiction movies we’ve seen throughout the years, it’s no surprise that many of us are sitting on the edge of our seat waiting for the world to end in 2012 (which is when the Mayan calendar says it’s all over).

I’m not one of those people; however, according to Robert Vicino, founder of Vivos, there are a lot of different reasons to think about the world coming to an end sooner rather than later. He believes so much in his theories that his privately funded company is creating twenty $10 million dollar doomsday bunkers all around the States. You can submit an application to purchase your slot in this little bunker of “hope” by visiting the Vivos website.

Here are the survival components in each bunker: Internal power generation system, backup battery banks, deep water wells, biological, chemical and radiation air filtration systems, sewage disposal systems, abundant food and clothing storage, security devices, medical equipment and supplies and critical support equipment including off-road vehicles. From a design standpoint, this fascinates me. This whole thing is about as futuristic as it gets, and according to Vivos, these bunkers could save all of humanity (and although I’m giggling, they are very serious). With a little research, I found that the US Army has a 233 page Survival Manual online. If you are interested, you can download that in PDF format here.

For some reason, I can’t stop thinking about Battlestar Galactica. All I can say is that I wish I could have been the one to write up the official press release about this product. To be able to get into the nitty gritty elements of this design would have been a blast! Below is a sampling of photos and a video tour.

Couldn’t help but notice all the bunk beds in the bunker. I call “bottom!”

You know, I’m still thinking, who wants to be underground when the world ends? I’d rather have center stage seating and watch the show, I mean really! When are you ever going to have a chance to watch the world actually end again? If it has to end anyway, I might as well watch and get as much enjoyment out of the experience as I can…

WTF!!!…
what more needs to be said!

I wonder how many people will apply for this?

I read that 1,000 people have submitted applications for this so far, can you believe it? I’m sure that number is higher now that it was featured on the national news in the States.

Do we have to wait for Doomsday to move in? This is nicer than my current place!

[...] Bitrebels just published a great find on Youtube of a CG rendering of a Doomsday bunker. It appears to have all the trappings of home even after home is no longer there.
