Alyssa Milano Rocks On Twitter

08/24/2009 - 9:00 am By Diana Adams

It’s always interesting to me to watch how celebrities use Twitter. As we all know, most celebrities tweet about one topic: Themselves. Although I, along with everyone else, am a bit curious, it gets old quick.

Every now and then you run across celebrities like @kathyireland and @collective_soul who interact a bit with their followers, which is rare. Even more rare is a celebrity who builds relationships and who really understands and appreciates how special Twitter is. It’s quite unusual to find a celebrity who understands how much we all have to gain by being one Twitter family, not divided into two groups: celebrities and non-celebrities.

This article is a Twitter tribute to @Alyssa_Milano, one unique celebrity who “gets it.” A self-proclaimed geek, you can find her on Twitter every day sharing her life, meeting new friends, and RT’ing tweets that support causes she believes in. She’s made it a point to get to know us and many consider her to be part of the Twitter gang.

What does a celebrity have to gain on Twitter by putting themselves out there like that? A lot. She knows she can count on us to make her laugh, RT important tweets and simply give her the same genuine, heartfelt kindness we would give any of our Twitter friends. I am sure Alyssa has learned that tweeple are very loyal to their Twitter friends.

When I contacted Alyssa for comment on this article, she was gracious and humbled that we decided to write about her. She offered a very insightful statement regarding how she views Twitter:

“Twitter is the pulse of social media. The user makes it breathe. The community I’ve tried to create with those that I follow and (hopefully) those that follow me, is not unlike a tangible neighborhood, where the residents are on equal ground, are good to each other, share information, and empower. I chose to use Twitter not as a “celebrity” but as a community member. And because of this, I feel people have a better understanding of who I really am and the issues that are important to me. Through Twitter, I’ve been given the platform to strip away any preconceived notion of perception verses reality, and just be part of a community of like-mindedness. That is a gift and I appreciate the opportunity.”

We are thrilled that we will soon be able to see Alyssa again as a regular on ABC’s “Romantically Challenged.”

To learn more about Alyssa and to read her impressive bio, you can visit her website at http://www.alyssa.com or follow her on Twitter at @Alyssa_Milano.

Because she became “Mrs. B” a little over a week ago by marrying David Bugliari, we thought this was the perfect time to wish them a wonderful life together! Alyssa, thank you for following @bitrebels on Twitter and for reading our blog!

One of Alyssa’s Twitter followers was so excited that Alyssa sent her a tweet that she posted it on YouTube. How cute!

Alyssa RT’d one of my tweets about http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com and I felt SO honored! By her RT’ing it she got the message out to more people in 5 minutes than I could have in 5 days! She is so intelligent, humble, caring, and all around amazing! Everyday I look forward to seeing her new tweets! You are a true role model Alyssa!

I totally agree! I was astounded when I first started following her how down to earth and level headed she was in her tweets. Sure, there was the excitement of getting “Romantically Challenged” picked up, but it was genuine excitement, one buddy to another. She is open and accepting, supportive and funny – everything you want in a friend – to 100k people at a time. Very rare.

Thank you for writing this. I have had a similar article regarding Alyssa in my “draft” box for a couple of weeks. She deserves the attention and more celebrities could learn a thing or two from her.

I never considered myself an Alyssa Milano fan until I started following her on Twitter. She engages with her network (I hate the “followers” term.

I’ll probably still post my article regarding Alyssa as it covers more of her sharp business mind and how she pays attention to other people and understands their needs.

Thanks for writing such an insightful article. For many of us who are not into celebrities, we grow weary of the constant focus our society has on entertainers. Yes, Alyssa Milano is a good actress, but I think as a person she stands out even more. I don’t follow her because she is a celebrity, I follow her because of who she is as a person, a caring individual who wants to make this world a better place and uses her celebrity for that, not to pour more attention on herself. It is so refreshing to see, and I’m glad that someone like her is a role model for our youth.

I’ve only recently started following Alyssa (didn’t realise she was on there). She is so lovely, she seems like a real sweet, genuine down to earth person (not the worldwide star she is) someone who if she was your friend you know you’d be able to rely on her for anything.

I find that there are a number of “Fakers” when it comes to Celebrities on Twitter, Facebook and My Space,The few real celebrities don’t take the time to be visible to their public. Alyssa is NOT one of them. She seems proud to be who she is and happy to share the warmth, emotions and Love with her followers and particularly friends.

I’ve been following Alyssa for a few months now. I started off because I’ve always been a fan of her work. In the past few months I’ve seen how genuinely down to earth she is! She is not like other celebrities. She is a real person, with real emotions, feelings, etc & she expresses them! I too had the pleasure of her responding to 2 of my tweets and i must say…it made my day. Alyssa is an inspiration & a role model. Other celebrities could learn from her. Thank you Alyssa for being you! You are fabulous! :)

Agreed, another celebrity on Twitter who I love to pay attention to is Nathan Fillion, he engages again in a similar way where he tells a little about his day to day stuff, including marveling at how he knicks himself with a razor, to causes which mean something to him as well, or just points on general courtesy. I’ve been “following” him since I found his MySpace page.

Diana, you always know how to write a well-written, thought-provoking, and positive article. Growing up with all the boys worshipping Alyssa Milano and I, wishing I could be her as a teenager, she is right. Twitter has given her a platform to connect with people on a human level and always conduct herself with kindness and class. it’s very refreshing and once again, Diana, you are an outstanding writer.

I got a direct tweet from her one night and I called my husband at work to tell him… my sons (age 6 and 15) were looking at me like I was nuts… I think she appeals to so many because we grew up with her and through it all she has handled it all with such grace. And… will she ever age???? :) We love her!

Alyssa is what Twitter is all about. I refer to her as my twitter Angel all the time. There aren’t words to do her justice here and especially on Follow Friday. How could you contain a description of Alyssa Milano in 140 characters!!! I have learned so much about being a better tweeter and person from her!

Alyssa is one person who has that balance on Twitter. She Tweets about charities, news, personal stories, humor, sends DMs, and RT to people. That’s all any Twitter person asks of anyone else who uses this medium. She is the perfect combination of friend, spokesperson, newscaster, comic, and Marshall, (for those fake people pretending to be celebs!). The only other person that interacts like her is Kirstie Alley.

I couldn’t agree more Diana. I started following Alyssa when she first started tweeting back in March. If you were to see her tweets back then as opposed to now, you would see a true evolution of a tweeter. When she started tweeting, many of her tweets were replies to fan’s questions and promoting her baseball book. Yet she learned that this medium could be used for much greater information then self promotion. She has been able to reveal more about herself by her RT’s and charity tweets than she ever could by just answering the same question a dozen times by different fans. I applaud her for her style of tweeting and allowing us to get to know her more as a member of the community rather than a look at me celeb. I find it sad when I see comments by people who unfollow her because she isn’t a gossip. That fact she isn’t is what keeps me coming back.

Alyssa is one “celeb” I have followed for ages and although I have never had a DM or RT from her I notice she replies to us “normal” tweeters. This is a rarity in the world of Twitter. However, I’d like to name a few other “celebs” that take time out to interact with their “normal” tweeters. So I shout out to @DonnieWahlberg @jordanknight @MrPeterAndre @joeymcintyre and @moonfrye

Absolutely and completely agree. Alyssa has a genuine kindness and humility that would be refreshing coming from anyone, much less a celebrity. I’ve received a personal reply from her and it’s weird how such a small gesture can be so important.
I can only hope some of the celebutards out there read this and realize that they might do well to get off their self-constructed pedestal and actually engage w/the community.

Ok, I must confess to having tweeted with the very gracious @Alyssa_Milano before recognizing her. The great thing is that she comes across as just another tweep – but one with great class and sensitivity, compassion. Her star power is evident not only in the size of her following but in the power and reach of her retweets. But her greatest star power is a sense of decency and “down-to-earthedness” (yes, cool new word)that is evident to anyone watching.

It is great to enjoy her laugh, tweet and share.

Glad you love Twitter, Alyssa – we love you!

Thanks, Diana, for another great article! Glen

I’ve met Alyssa a couple times a number of years ago when I was a photographer. Even then, I admired her humanity and caring attitude towards those less fortunate. Often she could be found helping out in the food lines to feed the hungry or online advocating for some cause she believed in.
My art, making latch-hook rugs, reflects my admiration. I made this one: http://twitpic.com/11wv26 of Alyssa and her horse because she had shared once that her horses meant a lot to her.
I’m looking forward to seeing her new show, and will continue following her twitter and visiting her website once in a while.
