5 Reasons Why You Should Comment on Blog Posts

12/02/2009 - 5:00 pm By Misty Belardo

I read a lot of blogs everyday, specially the ones on design, on technology, on advertising.  When I feel a bit down, I check out the funny blogs, pictures and videos.  Majority of the time I make sure I leave a comment on the blogs I read.  You see, there are a lot of advantages when you do comment on a blog post.  Here are some of them.

1.  Enables the writer to get feedback – Writers, like designers also like getting feedback on their work.  Helps them know, which types of material his readers like.  It enables him or her to also get a pulse on which topics are relevant to the people who come back everyday, or at least once a week to read his articles.  It is also your way of showing appreciation to the writer, it does take a lot of research and hours making sure that every article informative and useful for many.

2.  Get traffic to your own blogs -  If you own a blog, or a site and you make useful comments, then some of the other readers might want to check out your site as well.  I do get a lot of traffic too on my own blog whenever I make creative and useful comments.

3.  Others learn from your insight -  All of us have varying opinions on different topics. Giving insightful comments can eventually help others.

4.  Develop your personal brand -  I noticed that when I did start making comments on blogs, it has somehow, helped get Mistygirlph or Misty Belardo, known around the interwebs.  Try it, try to type your name on Google search and see how many links back to your personal brand, you.  Mine is now over 60,000 pages and growing.

5.  Helps you think of a topic for your next article – Some articles are so thought provoking, or so interesting, that people leave questions on the blog comments.  Other times, you can see the trends that people are looking for.

But also consider making comments that are constructive, insightful and inspiring.

So the next time you read a blog, try and comment, go ahead, you see leaving a comment also inspires the writers to create their master piece.

Misty,

This is a great article. Wow, so many of these things I never thought of before. I often read posts, even on this site, and I think they are great, but I don’t take the time to leave a comment. I’m going to start leaving more comments for sure. You rock girl!

Not only do I love BitRebels but the points discussed in the article are some of the major reasons why I spend time commenting on various blogs.

I also noticed that a lot of the users commenting below do not have avatars. It’s a simple way to extend your brand presence and be more memorable to other users and the writer.

Excellent post. You make a very valid point. By sharing and interacting we all gain.

The blog writer benefits from feedback. It helps them to plan future posts, and it rewards them for the time spent preparing a useful post.

The comment provider gains by sharing their own insight, expressing agreement, or expressing a well thought out counter argument.

Both parties win. So do future post readers, who reap value from the insight of the writer and the community alike.

The true benefit of the Internet is not limited to our ability to publish insights and opinions quickly. The true benefit of the Internet lies in people around the world interacting, sharing their own views.

Thanks for providing such a great post. I’ll be looking forward to more of your articles.

One item related to your fifth reason – sometimes bloggers just HAVE to write. If a blogger isn’t writing something for his/her own blog, then comments on other blogs allow a method of self-expression.

Another thing to note – if you’re a blogger, you want to make it as easy as possible for people to comment on your posts. While I appreciate that some blogs require moderation, I personally have a dislike for captchas, especially when they’re overly complex. There have been instances where I’ve refrained from commenting because it was too hard to get past the captcha.

Writing blog posts myself, when someone does leave a comment its a good feeling. Actually, point #5 is definitely true, have had inspiration for new posts based on comments.

However, even when people arent leaving comments, you can see people ARE reading your content thanks to analytics. If I’m honest, I would prefer to have comments though!

Also, comments drive us bloggers to write more and better stuff.

But often it’s difficult to find the words to address someone you barely know, even if you agree with their point of view.

Carl Smart made a point with his comment. Is easy to say “Yeah, great post, whatever” only to spread some backlinks over the net.

I try to comment frequently on blogs mainly because I want to contribute to the discussion and also to attract visits to our museum blog.

To your reason nr.3 I’d add that you can also learn from the other commentators if you engage in the discussion and get feed-back about your own comments.

And a practice I’ve been doing for a while and has proved useful to me is to copy all my comments in one document so that I can have a look at when writing posts or other texts: the inspiration some posts and comments wakes up, provoke you writing thoughts you might never have had without that thread.

Excellent “keeper” blog post. Great contribution.

Industry reporters are all over these blog comments looking for subject matter experts and other people to write about or to have comment for future.

Be sure to “sign” all of your blog comments with your name, title, company, company URL and Bog URL, so that interested others can appropriately weigh and value your professional expertise and credibility as well as find their way back to you, should they wish to interview you, “Like” you (FB), “connect” with you (LI), or “follow” you (Twitter), etc. That way it becomes a win-win for all.

Thank you.
