5 Reasons To Write Guest Posts

12/09/2009 - 5:00 pm By Misty Belardo

I like Blogging, no I love it, I never thought I could really do this, I am just truly grateful to people who have encouraged me to just dive in. If you, like me want to fuel your passion and start a blog, then you are in for a ride.  Starting a Blog site is easy, well easier than getting people to actually know that your blog exists.  So many things you need to do in order to get some following and people to actually know what you are about.

Guest posting is one way to get you started.  I know, you may ask me, why should i even bother, considering that you already have your blog to share your content, plus will require a lot of your time. But let me share with you  the  5 reasons why you should write guest posts:

1.  Free Publicity – If you are new and not a celebrity, its good to write for sites that already have a good following. Just make sure that your content fits the theme of that site/blog.  Most site owners will let you have a small bio or allow you to place your url or your Twitter username on your guest post.  Others may even give you space on their site like a mini banner.

2.  Wider Audience Reach – Specially if the site already has a lot of readers, you will get the chance to share your knowledge to a vast number of audience.

3.  Natural SEO – You see the more materials that comes out from you and if others link back to you or your article and even your site, when others search for that specific tag or topic, your article, or your name or your site will be in the top of the search engine options for people to click on.

4.  Meet New People and Create Friendships – I can attest to the fact that people I have had the chance to write for, i have already developed close ties or friendships with them.  It is always  great to develop friendships and even your network just by writing useful posts on other people’s sites.  Always good to collaborate with people you know are already very knowledgeable on their fields, not only do you learn from them,  if your materials are really exceptional and helpful to their readers, you might even get good recommendations.

5.  Share your Passion - By writing articles relevant to a particular site but not entirely related to your blog theme, you get to share your other passions.  Example, your site is on design, but you also like to cook and whip up special food creations, then by writing on Food related sites you get to share that other love you have to people who are interested in food and cooking.

i am sure that you guys have other reasons for writing guest posts, please feel free to share them here.  I myself have done a lot of guests posts.  I was just lucky enough to meet people who allowed me into their world, let me express my thoughts.  The next time someone asks you if you could do a guest post for them, Go ahead, test the waters and engage.  You won’t regret it.

Guest posting is very important if you take blogging seriously, it can help bring in new visitors. However, you have to make sure your guest posting on a blog in the same or similar niche so it makes your content relevant.

Thanks Misty!

I wrote a similar article about a year ago title The 7 Reasons Every Blogger Should Be Guest Posting which ironically was a guest post ;-)

One additional reason that I might add your list Different Social Networks and Reach FTA:Each of the bloggers may utilize different social networks, and have varying amounts of reach on each one. For example, my main social networks are on Twitter, StumbleUpon, Facebook and Blog Catalogue. Although I don’t have the strongest presence on Digg, I can work with a guest blogger that does (but doesn’t necessarily have a strong StumbleUpon profile). Since we will both be trying to promote each guest post through our various social networks, our combined efforts will give our content a farther reach.

This combined effort creates what I like to call “Social Media Synergy”. If you want to see “Social Media Synergy” in action, just check your analytics program a day or two after guest posting, and I know that you will be happy with the increase in traffic that you see.

Great post Misty and clear to the point. I also like to appreciate the work of others by adding value to their post.

If I read a good post the minimum I can do to appreciate the work is commenting on it.

Another thing is to promote the article on social networks to help the writer achieving success.

How do you make the opportunity to write a guest post possible? Do you write something and submit or do you ask if you can write?

[Reply]

Misty Belardo Reply:

If you have a blog, and people who have websites visit your website or blog and likes what you write then, most often than not you get invited to write guest posts. There are occasions where I myself have seen a site and asked the owner if i could write an article specially when its something I know I can contribute good content for.

A great introduction Misty! The SEO benefits from guest posts are often under-estimated. Links that pass on the best ranking influence need to be from related and trusted websites.

If you’re guest blogging for a related niche, then you’re automatically getting a link from a related website.

Any tips on finding blogs to write for? Have you checked out our BlogSynergy.com project (platform for finding guest bloggers and blogs wanting guest writers)? Would love to know your thoughts!

Thanks
Dan

Hi Dan, Yes, some people do overlook the benefits, all the things that I write about here comes from experience. I have done a lot of guest posts already and most of them were from invitation of site owners. I am just lucky and grateful for people who felt that I had something good to share to their audience and just allowed me to share. Thank you for sharing your site, will definitely check it out! :D

Hi Misty

That’s fantastic that you’ve been getting invitations to write for others! Being a well-respected writer is a great way to get guest blogging opportunities.

Do you stick to just your niche? Or have you branched out a little to try different niches? If so, have you noticed any benefits or disadvantages?

Thanks
Dan

Good question Dan, but if you notice I cover a bit of subject (niche) writing, blogging and design, plus tech and social media, Yes there is a big advantage, as mentioned in point number 5, i get to share information other than blogging tips and learn from the site owners themselves.

Thanks Dan, I truly love engaging with you on here. :)

I have sent out several invites to guest post on my blog, or be a regular. I have had 3 responses, one seems to be a sure bet. I read articles like this one all the time and think it’s a great way to have new material for your blog and of course it creates new visitors and traffic. But,trying to get someone to actually do a guest post seems impossible.

Thanks for the post, and you are welcome to guest post at mine. :)

I agree with you 100% on every point on this article Misty, Guest posting benefits both the poster and the blog you are posting on and is great for developing friendships while also finding and expanding your audience of readers.
