I find a lot of my great ideas come while I am doing rote activities: walking, cleaning, shaving, etc. Anything that unhooks my conscious mind seems to work.

Grea tips Diana. Being comfortable with silence has spurred me to creativity more than any practice. After meditating I go on a creativity spree. When in the flow all things are possible. I also keep my pen and pad handy. Most creative ideas are stillborn and need to be recorded before they fade away.

This is very helpful, especially during lean times such as these. It is so easy to reduce everything (in business at least) to a financial calculation. This is hopelessly reductive and a fast track to commoditization.

Great article Diana! The only caution I have is with #13 (quoted). I completely agree with the statement, but have friends who have followed the sleep deprivation thing, only to be collected a few days in, by men wearing white and carrying butterfly nets.

Good post. A great reminder to indulge in the things that got me into this. My boss recently told me that he wanted me to start doing crazy “art stuff” on the company dime… he is constantly pushing me to open up even further creatively, to take more chances. Which is one of many reasons I love what I do.
