Darn You Facebook Games!

Do you know what I hate?

Facebook games.

Do you know what I hate more than Facebook games?

Updates from Facebook games that your friends just beat your score or they just purchased pigs on the farm.

Is it just me or have Facebook games and applications taken over your social media world too?

It may be hard to tell from that intro, but I am actually a big fan of Facebook. I think that the application is the best way to keep up and remain social with friends… especially the ones you have not seen in a while or have moved far away.  Unlike many other social media sites, Facebook has games and other interactive applications that you can take part in with your friends.  The interaction and usability of Facebook makes it a winner. That is, unless you are a looser at its games.

What I want to know is who has time to build a farm or manage a mob? Truthfully, I’d love to ride around in a big tractor all day and grow some corn but I doubt the barn has wireless internet.  Does anyone work anymore?

The worst part about Facebook games are the endless updates and recruits you find in your messages and feed. I’ve seen a growing trend recently where the applications have taken over my Facebook Live feed. I used to love just reading friends updates and commenting on whats going on. Now, I find myself hiding those game updates and requests faster than I could ever match “gems” in Bejeweled Blitz.

no-farmvilleOthers too are seeing similar waves about Facebook. Facebook “Groups” are now putting up a sparing match with the applications.  There are so many Farmville updates that groups such as “Not Playing Farmville” have risen. Do a search for “Mafia Wars” and you will get over 100 results of groups and pages dedicated to taking down the mob.

Facebook is at least smart enough to give its users the ability to customize its interface and “Hide” the annoyance of updates that dont appeal to you. If there is anything you dont wish to receive, simply click “Hide” just to the right of the message.

Now if you will excuse me, I just dropped to 5th amongst my friends in Bejeweled Blitz.

hahahah!! You read my mind, man. Facebook games are the devil. They’re way too addicting, too! I have to get work done, not play games all day. I’ve lost probably 100s of purely good working hours this year to those stupid games, especially the mindjolt pool.

LOL I love playing FaceBook games.. they are very addicting.. But what i do is actually turn off the status so the game does not show any updates from me whenever i level up or do anything there. And yes great that you also indicated the hide instructions! cool! :) Thank you for sharing, fun read!!

Am I wrong, or doesn’t clicking hide next to someone’s game updates then hide everything frm them? So you don’t then see status updates or anything else from them again? I don’t necessarily want that…

Todd/Misty – haha, I actually love and hate the facebook games. Too addicting and time consuming. I also wish there was a way to play them and not update everyone about it!

gurukarm – You should have the choice to hide just updates from a particular game.

I am pretty new to Facebook and yes all the Farmville
and other game updates are..well I find them funny. What
really gets to me is when someone wants you to adopt some poor sheep or some other animal…I really feel sorry for
these critters but not sure what it takes to care for them.
Not sure I would have the time to nurture another animal
let alone build a farm..always give congrats to those who have sold a bumper crop of very descriptive vegetables..
Funny stuff! Great post! Thanks!

I’ve never played a Facebook Game, and really get annoyed with the constant stream of updates I get from other people. But, even in this post and the comments, I see that I’m in the minority of people who truly LOATHE Facebook games.

LMAO! Good read Christian. Does that mean you will not be
my neighbor in Farmville? I only need 3 more to get my next ribbon. =)
It is good you provided instructions for people who want to block games and updates and its even better that FB allows you to do that.
P.S.
You only hate Bejeweled because I kick your ass at it!

I used to sign up for every single game my friends invited me to….then I actually got addicted to some of them (rassafrackin Farmville eating up all of my time grumble) and found myself actually getting up at 5am like a REAL farmer to check VIRTUAL crops. That was it for me. Most of my friends would get mad because even though I sent out the gifts, etc. that go along with the games I didn’t participate in the status update clogging other stuff which is a big part of getting “extras” for whatever game you are playing. I agree, though. As much as I do love my friends and some of the FB games, I am really getting tired of the constant posts.

The hide option is gone from my option. All I can do now is hide the person.

Hey Christian!

I’ve heard that Facebook, will post all Application Updates and Posts and Invites and Notifications in a new Inbox…. so not anymore in the feed….
i think they have noticed the there are many people, who doesn’t like their wall spammed by app-games. so i think this new thing will start between december and january….

so look forward to it
best wishes anton

I was right there with you till the end…then the comment about rank dropping in Bejeweled Blitz. I now feel a much closer bond to you! Hehe…

It drives me nuts to see the updates from the FB games and I usually hide the user’s updates…unless it’s my kids. Then I have that competitive, you-can’t-beat-me-I’m-your-Mom urge to kick some 17 & under bootie on Bejeweled.

I too wonder how anyone gets work done or if they even care to. Temptation is overwhelming and 20 games is history before you realize what you’ve done. FB games are just plain evil.

I hate Facebook games & most applications that want access to all of my friends’ personal information. They are annoying & invasive. I’d rather actually (gasp!) communicate than play online games. What a way to waste hours of your life.

Have you seen the Farmville Ad Parody on You Tube? Classic.

Personally, I admit to playing restaurant city.

I have no idea why but I am always amazed at how other people have built up those crazy restaurants! That is HOURS of play time!!! It tells you a lot about your friends. LOL
