Jeans Made From Recycled Plastic Beer Bottles

Jeans-Made-From-Beer-Bottles

If you have hosted a party and served beer in bottles, you know that very quickly you will have a bag full of those bottles which needs recycling. It seems like such a waste really, and even though beer tastes better out of a cold bottle than a can, it isn’t very good for the environment. These days, we are seeing more and more beer bottles made out of plastic instead of glass.

Some people get creative when it comes to recycling beer bottles. A few years ago I wrote about the guy who spent 19 years collecting 6 million beer bottles, and then he used them all to build a house. It’s a true story, and you can read about it at The 6 Million Bottle Man. Then there was a couple of guys who used 5,000 beer cans to make a fully functional sound system, but those weren’t bottles, so it doesn’t really count. It was definitely neat though! You can read about that at Can’t Afford A Sound System? Build One From Beer Cans.

On thing I haven’t seen done with recycled beer bottles is repurposing them into clothes. A company called Earthspun Apparel has developed a process where they collect, sort, clean, shred and melt plastic beer bottles. After that, they blend them with cotton and spin them into yarn. Of course I’m simplifying the process, but you can read about it in more detail on ecouterre. I think it’s neat how on the tag inside these jeans, you can see a picture of how many plastic beer bottles were used to make each particular pair of jeans. These jeans are part of a collection called Bottle Rockets, and they sell here for $135 a pair. Unfortunately, right now, they are only made for men.
