This is one of my favorite Internet hoaxes ever. I remember when this first circulated in email many years ago. I just got another email about it today, which brought back some fun memories.
In my opinion, the best Internet hoaxes are the ones that are the simplest. When this first came out, everyone believed it was true and it caught on like wildfire. After all, there has always been a fascination with seeing through clothes, right?
The creator of this hoax was brilliant because he even fooled everyone when “the truth” came out. This is how the hoax went down: Pictures were published all over the internet and distributed in email claiming that these were transparent skirts. Then, suddenly “the truth came out” and everyone found out that these skirts were not really transparent, but rather skirts with legs and panties painted on them to make them look as if they were see-through.
In other words, everyone thought these were designs on the skirts. Women everywhere wanted to know where to buy skirts like these. To make it even better, the creator of this hoax said these skirts were all the rage in Japan, and since we know how bizarre some Japanese fashion trends are, it just added fuel to the fire.
This went on for a while and blogs all over the Internet were reporting this story. Then, as always happens, the REAL truth came out. This is not a product that even exists (although perhaps someone somewhere has since created it because people obviously want it). Check out the snopes info here.
It was all just simply the work of a great Photoshop artist who then attached an elaborate two part story to his masterpiece. To this day, some people swear this story is true, but I don’t believe it is. Gotta love Photoshop!
