Not only is this portrait incredible because it’s beautifully put together with 750 pairs of socks, but since I love socks so much (I have at least 100 pairs), it’s extra special to me and I couldn’t wait to write about it. Hong Yi, also known as Red, has a reputation for creating jaw-dropping portraits from unusual materials. Richard recently wrote about the portrait she made from spilled coffee. At that time, it was unbelievable to me that someone could make art from coffee stains.
Hong Yi is back again, and this time she was inspired by walking through Shanghai and seeing bamboo sticks hanging out some of the windows with socks dangling on them to dry. She though the visual of those drying socks was beautiful, and she decided to create a portrait of Chinese director Yimou Zhang (who often used bamboo in his films) with white, black and grey socks.
She said she “found an interesting way to pin the socks together, creating a diamond-shaped piece of skin.” It took three weeks to make this, and as you can see from the pictures below, it doesn’t look like it was all that easy. I can’t wait to see what Hong Yi creates next! She is definitely an artist who doesn’t see any limits to what she is able to do. You can learn more about her at Oh I See Red.
