If you are a healthy woman in the prime of your life, there is a pretty good chance you are obsessing over a part of your body that you aren’t happy with. I wrote an article a while back called Love Your Body With All Its Perfect Imperfections, and it hit home because I beat myself up about this stuff all the time. The ironic thing is, I’m not fat, but I can always point to a part of my body that I wish was skinnier or more muscular.
The three most common things that women probably obsess about (aside from the size of our breasts) are bad hair days, zits and big butts (and I don’t mean big as in curvy, I mean big as in fat). We don’t want those things, and some of us work hard to be sure we don’t get them.
However, let’s put it into perspective for a moment. Are we really obsessing about the right things? The difference between any of these things and breast cancer is the difference between life and death. Suddenly a zit, messy hair and our butt size don’t seem so important anymore, does it? Just yesterday I wrote an article about women superheroes and their creative breast exam PSA illustrations. The Breast Cancer Foundation in Singapore made this very poignant body art campaign to raise breast cancer awareness and to perhaps help us put things into perspective when it comes to the state of our bodies. They’ve come up with a very creative way to combine bad hair days, zits and big butts with breasts. It’s a great reminder that if we are healthy, we are blessed, period.
