What is Baconfest??

Well, I am glad you asked – or else this post would have ended there.

Baconfest is An all-day festival of bacon where bacon lovers from all over the world gather, and raise their cholesterol levels together in the celebration of the sweet sweet goodness that is bacon. Baconfest was held on April 10th, 2010 – but don’t worry – we have a few clips from Baconfest below.

It featured many of Chicago’s finest chefs and there were obviously a TON of bacon related dishes at the event, They even had lots of sponsors that included The Onion, vendors such as Vosges Haut Chocolat and Nueske’s, an amateur bacon recipe cook-off between five finalists and a Bacon Bar and Lounge. Oh, and by the way, the Festival was COMPLETELY SOLD OUT. So yeah, go bacon!

What else is at Baconfest??

Pretty much anything and everything BACON Related!!

Have you ever wondered how those little ‘lightning in a box’ things you see at random gift stores, internet stores, and fellow geeks houses are made?

Maybe you can make one to impress your friends, or give to your mom to distract her from the fact you still live in her basement (shh we won’t tell).

Whatever your motive – They look stunning and all are unique and impressive, but no, they don’t come straight from the hand of Thor.

With some pretty simple steps, science, and some not so simple tools, you too (mere mortal) can force lightning into a box!

How to capture lightning

It’s called The Lichtenberg Effect and Here is what you need to do it:

1. 1 Clear plastic polymer – such as fiberglass or acrylic
2. Linear Accelerator or Generator capable of generating high voltage (around 1 million volts)
3. Sharp object – such as a nail or insulated center punch

The following videos have some detailed (and awesome) examples of the process behind creating these things – Enjoy!

This effect is very similar to the result of lightning striking objects like people and tree’s

Ok, so if you are a nerd or geek of any kind then you have probably seen an XKCD or two. Well I am a die hard early adopting computer science geeky programming nerd – and have probably seen each and every one of them on the days that they are released.

But odds are if you haven’t seen these at all, or have seen a couple, then this list is for you! I have went through and picked out some of my favorite XKCD comics of all time (So far)!

Disclaimer: Before the haters post “Why didn’t you include episode XXX!? WTF!” there are a lot of these, and some of your favorites may not be included, so if you have a fav that isn’t here, feel free to leave it in the comments! Also note, these are in no particular order.

Perhaps we are getting ahead of ourselves here, some of you are probably wondering, wtf is xkcd?

XKCD is Awesomesauce!

It’s basically one of the most popular web comics ever made. It appeals to almost every geek because the topics are so broad that they give you the human side of geekdom – Topics include: Love, Math, Computer Science & Programming just to name a few. It has even been featured in Wired Magazine!

If you are wondering what it stands for… It’s not actually an acronym. It’s just a word with no phonetic pronunciation. It stands for the comic and everything the comic stands for!

XKCD is a creation of Randall Munroe that has completely exploded since its inception way back in in September of 2005 when Munroe decided to scan doodles from his school notebooks and put them on his webpage.

If you couldn’t tell by the title of this post, this is hilariously awesome. (Hopefully you caught the Tom Green sausage reference in the image as well)

Where is this happening? Asia, Obviously. More precisely, this craze has started in South Korea.

As you have probably heard, Apple iPhone users have had hard times using the device in the cold, because the cold makes your fingers hurt! The first workaround to this issue is to wear gloves, but that doesn’t work well, or at all because of how the iPhones touch screen interface handles touch.

They even have gloves made specifically for the iPhone!!

Companies probably poured thousands of man hours, ideas, and not to mention hundreds of thousands of dollars at those gloves. Most of those gloves were miserable failures!

However, the Koreans got it right.

They knew that all we needed was….

A FREAKING Sausage Stylus!!! iPhone Sausage Stylus FTW!

All I can say…

Brilliant. well, I guess I can say this is Hilarious too.

Maybe I could say “ROFLCOPTER” too. Anyway…

This method obviously has its downsides – Such as:

1. Most Sausages are pretty girthy (that’s right, I said Girthy) and may cause you to ‘fat finger’ a lot of typos
2. Most Americans are pretty hungry, and will probably Eat their stylus as an afternoon snack, then they are stylus-less!
3. You could be attacked by a bear with the insatiable hunger for oscar mayer sausages (I totally had to sing the song to remember how to spell ‘Oscar Mayer’)

Besides those obvious drawbacks – This could be a hit in America as well. In-fact I am sure some people are already doing it!!

Upsides Definitely Outweigh The Downsides…

Not only can you keep your fingers toasty in your non-iPhone compatible gloves, but hell, they double as DRUMSTICKS!!

You tell me that is not awesome. I freaking Dare you.

So here at Bit Rebels, We salute you South Koreans, for making our fingers warmer, and our stomachs fuller.

So what true Geek doesn’t love Star Wars? That’s Right. They ALL love Star Wars. Even the people who aren’t Geeks love Star Wars (some won’t admit this, but whatev).

Anyway, as you know I am big into sneakers, and something you may not have known about me is that I used to be a fitness FREAK pre-wife and kids.

I spent a large amount of my late high school/college life working out, running, etc. My Favorite shoes for that? OBVIOUSLY Adidas (I was a big Nike fan as well, but there is just something about adidas that floated my boat).

So now you can see why my inner fitness nerd is so happy about these new Star Wars Edition Sneakers from Adidas!! You are about to be pretty psyched about these bad boys as well!!

Woah! Star Wars Shoes!

You can stop drooling now. Well, maybe just another minute.

These are probably the coolest ‘Themed’ or ‘Branded’ shoes I have ever seen that are done actually pretty well! The coolest thing about these to me is how it really looks like Adidas and Lucas Films actually collaborated on the shoes to make them really LOOK like they were inspired by the images that are behind the shoes.

If you look closely you will notice that the Yoda inspired shoes are cloth-like as well as rough and bumpy sort of like Yoda’s Skin. Also, the AT-AT & Storm Trooper shoes look spot on.

Well It looks like you can buy them at Adidas Original stores which are Brick and Mortar stores located in most Large Cities, Or you can try to catch these things online! I have found that you can buy some of these here. Although it looks like some aren’t available online, or haven’t been released yet, so definitely keep a check at the adidas online shop for these things.

So there is no surprise, that I like Awesome Japanese stuff.

What true geek doesn’t?! Well if you like awesome Japanese stuff as well, you are in for a treat!

The trucks you are about to see today have been around for about 30 years in Japan, but many Americans are just now actually seeing some of these things.

They are called Dekotora trucks, and they look totally badass. Think Optimus Prime + a Delivery Truck = Dekotora.

What is Dekotora!?

The Dekotora or Decotora (デコトラ), an abbreviation for “Decoration Truck”, is a kind of loudly decorated truck most commonly found in Japan and the Philippines. Dekotora commonly have neon or ultraviolet lights, extravagant paints, and shiny stainless or golden exterior parts. These decorations can be found on both the cab and the trailer, and not only on the exterior but also in the interior. Dekotora may be created by workers out of their work trucks for fun, or they may be designed by hobbyists for special events. They are sometimes also referred to as Art Trucks (アートトラック) ātotorakku)

These trucks are 100% Street Legal (Except when their crazy, epileptic seizure inducing lights are on, then they are considered a road hazard) and are still found around the streets of Japan and the Philippines today!

Well I hope this post inspired you, as well as enlightened you about a piece of the crazy and interesting Japanese culture!

So you love sneakers? Pfft yeah who doesn’t!?

Regardless of if you love sneakers or not, each and everyone of us use them on a daily/weekly/monthly basis.

Sometimes I switch it up with sandals, but you seriously can’t beat the sneaker.

Since sneakers are in our daily lives and we see them all the time, some people don’t really see them as an art form, or a collectors item. That is where Sneaker Con comes in to blow your mind.

So what is Sneaker Con?

Well, Sneaker Con is a Buy/Sell/Trade Sneaker and Clothing Convention that is held Annually.

When is it!?

The 2nd Annual Sneaker Conference just happened! It was held on January 9th, 2010 – but now that you know about it, you should head out to the next event that they have! For more details check out their website.

You remember Nerf Guns. Everyone has had one. We remember fond memories as a child, wish soft squishy nerf darts, chasing each other and laughing.

Well these Nerf guns are like none of those.

These take your old Nerf guns lunch money, and stuffs them in a locker, successfully scarring them for life.

These are awesome deadly killing machines!!

Nerf guns are terribly fun out of the box, and you can play with them for hours! Shooting co-workers, siblings, cats, dogs, mailmen. You name it – Shooting it with a nerf gun = Fun.

However, Natural instincts of Humans (mostly Geeks) get bored with the out of the box Nerf guns. We hunger for more power, speed, accuracy. So we either put the Nerf gun in the corner and never play with it again, or, we do the alternative.

Mod the ever living crap out of it!!

Sit back and enjoy these freaking awesome Nerf Gun Mods!! However, Don’t try this at home, Unless you are AWESOME.

500 Round Per Minute Dart Chaingun Hack

The Nerf Vulcan out of the box, actually shoots pretty slow, and is awfully disappointing since it looks completely huge and awesome. But these guys made it shoot 500 RPM!! However, this is only the beginning, the folks at http://www.manapotions.com/ are devoted to their Nerf Vulcan Mod – and have improved it even more! As you will see in the next video. However, that human nature of Geeks that we mentioned earlier urged them to hold a contest to see if anyone could beat 600 RPM!

The contest produced another awesome mod as a result – which you will see in the next video .

Dual-Can Vulcan turret – 1000 rounds per minute

This is awesome. What is better than 1 500 RPM Vulcan mod? TWO! They managed to seamlessly integrate 2 beast nerf guns into 1! I am sure it is not fun to get pelted by all those high powered nerf darts, hilarious to watch, nonetheless!

This is probably one of my favorite Nerf Gun Mods EVER. Simply because it involves so much nerdyness, technology, and awesomeness to create. It was created by Jeremy Blum and Jason Wright as a final project for Cornell University’s CS1114 Matlab Robotics class. The end result is the type of security ever toy store should have.

Radio Controlled Nerf Vulcan Tank

This is another awesomely techy Nerf Mod. It has Radio controls, a web cam, laser sights, and the ability to play music – the Vulcan is temporarily modified with a servo for remote firing. The sound system is an amplifier and some speakers hooked up to an iPod. You can even check out how this one was made!

Nerf Maverick “air taser” for $25

This one just sounds dangerous lol. You can check out how this one is made as well!

Nintendo Zapper Nerf Gun

This one is ultimately useless, but I had to include it for the 8-Bit NES Throwback! Who would have thought of using a zapper for this!?

Nerf Maverick Steampunk Mod

Some Nerf Gun Mods don’t do anything cool, but they sure look BADASS! This is one that I particularly like the look of – I am a big fan of steampunk in general. I thought this one was well done – There are a lot of these artsy mods floating around as well, so if you want to see more check out Deviant Art for more artsy nerf mods, This one was found there, and was done by ~aimeekitty.

Maybe Nerf Guns Aren’t Your Thing…

Obviously the Nerf Gun Modding community is thriving with awesome mods – a simple youtube search will yield you a TON of modded nerf guns, ranging from the awesome ones that we just saw, to the less awesome, but still creative ones.

However, Even if you don’t like the nerf guns, you may still like the bullets, so why not build your own gun to fire nerf darts!? That is what some of the following people did. Check them out!

Home Made Dart Gun 210 feet+

This is a totally custom gun that can shoot Nerf Darts up to 210 feet!!! That is pretty impressive, since they typically do not shoot that far lol.

Worlds Most Powerful Nerf Gun

This one is kind of cheating, because they are just stuffing a nerf dart in a real gun. but watching these dudebros hurt their friend with it is pretty entertaining lol.

Maybe you don’t like Nerf at All…

Maybe you just want to build a toylike gun that does something totally awesome!? There are also some AWESOME non-nerf mods in there, such as the Rubber Band Shooter (of death) and a Lego gun that shoots Legos!

Maybe you are just into the modding scene in general! Check these out as well if you are into the modding of just about anything! The following videos will definitely bring your Inner Destructive Geek some Joy .

Disintegrator: 24 Barrels of Rubber Bandy Death

All I can say for this one is… Pfft. Wow. Have you ever been hit with a rubber band? Of course you have. It hurts. Well this boasts a 288-band capacity and 40-round-per-second firing capability. Consider all that wrath coming at you at once? If you die can I have your Xbox? No Seriously, it would hurt, Bad. But the video makes it look ridiculously fun to use.

Fully Automatic LEGO Gun

This probably wouldn’t hurt too bad, compared to the last gun – However it is still awesome, and looks like it took quite a while to build!!

That is enough nerdy awesome modded stuff for one post!

I hope you enjoyed perusing through the modding world – Nerf or Not. I personally love seeing new and inventive ways to enjoy old toys, such as Nerf Guns, Rubber Bands, and Legos! Think of it as enjoying your childhood but being able to say “EXTREME!” while doing it.

Christmas season is finally here, for some of us, it means time with the family, and lots of traveling. For others, it means a lot of free time, and a LOT of gaming. So this year, why not look back on all the great games we used to play, and dust off our old systems, or boot up that PC game you haven’t played in years.

Whether you are a hardcore gamer, or a casual one, I am sure you have heard of some, if not all of these games. I have personally played them all and think they are top notch!

So Lets take a walk down Memory lane. With the 10 best games of the Decade! (According to Bit Rebels). Enjoy!

10. Diablo II

This game. Was Epic. I remember I had to buy a new computer (i.e. err. bug my parents for months to buy me a new computer) just so I could play this game with all the cool nerds in high school.

Diablo II was one of the most popular games of 2000. Major factors that contributed to Diablo II’s success include its addictive gameplay and access to the free online play service, Battle.net. Loved playing this game online with friends, or even offline was fun once in a while!

9. Age of Empires II

This was actually released at the end of 1999 – but i’d say that it totally counts. I spent countless hours playing with friends over LAN as well as over the internet – where people created awesome custom maps and even created custom scenarios that were extra fun to play (and took HOURS. like world maps, where you take over the entire world).

Reception of The Age of Kings was overwhelmingly positive, and the game scored highly on review aggregators. The significant number of new features was praised, as were the gameplay improvements. Some reviewers were critical of the presentation of units—they were seen as bland and uninteresting—while others considered The Age of Kings to be overly similar to its predecessor, Age of Empires. Three months after its release, two million copies of The Age of Kings had been shipped, and it topped sales charts in seven countries. The game won multiple awards and has had a significant impact on future games in its genre.

8. Super Smash Bros.

Another late arrival in 1999 – but it was played long after it was released by me and my friends from high school, it was an amazingly fun party game, and probably one of the best reasons to have a party back in the day! Never a dull moment in this game. It was so fast paced and hilarious at times.

Super Smash Bros. received mostly positive reviews from the media. It was commercially successful, selling over 4.9 million copies, with 2.93 million copies sold in the United States, and 1.97 million copies sold in Japan.

7. Final Fantasy XII

Obviously some of the best games ever have come from the Final Fantasy series. With Final Fantasy XII being no exception. Whether you were an old fan of the series, or a newcomer with this one, it was no doubt an enjoyable experience that will stick with you .

Final Fantasy XII received universally high scores, and earned numerous awards in various categories from noted video game publications. Selling more than two million copies in Japan, it became the fourth best-selling PlayStation 2 game of 2006 worldwide. As of March 2007, the game has shipped over 5.2 million copies worldwide.

6. Halo

One of the most revolutionary games to hit the xbox console was without a doubt Halo. This game came out of no where and captured the hearts of every FPS fan out there. The ability to ride around in Warthogs and snipe your opponent from miles away made this game a party and Online played hit. Another countless amount of hours, spent fragging friends at parties.

Many game magazines have praised Halo as one of the best and most important games of all time. The game’s popularity has led to labels such as “Halo clone” and “Halo killer”, applied respectively to games either similar to or anticipated to be better than it. In addition, the game inspired and was used in the fan-created Red vs. Blue video series, which is credited as the “first big success” of machinima —the technique of using real-time 3D engines, often from video games, to create animated films.

5. Counter-Strike: Source

One of my all-time favorite games – has to be – counter-strike!!! I miss playing this game so much. I spent a freaking huge portion of my high school life pwning n00bs and mastering 1337 speak while playing Counter Strike. Source is the re-make of Counter Strike using the Source engine. Just as good as the classic, but twice as pretty.

As in the original, Counter-Strike: Source pits a team of counter-terrorists against a team of terrorists in a series of rounds. Each round is won either by completing an objective (such as detonating a bomb or rescuing hostages) or by eliminating all members of the opposing team.

4. World of Warcraft

Probably one of the most widespread addictions known to man. World of Warcraft is both beautiful and hella fun to play. It takes everything that RPGs and MMORPGs have given us in the past and expounded upon their awesomeness.

With more than 11.5 million (December 2008) monthly subscriptions, World of Warcraft is currently the world’s most-subscribed MMORPG and holds the Guinness World Record for the most popular MMORPG by subscribers. In April 2008, World of Warcraft was estimated to hold 62 percent of the massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) subscription market.

3. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Taking a game like Call of Duty 4 and making it better is no easy feat. This is the modern day Counter Strike – It is a fresh new mix of awesome FPS action that makes multiplayer extremely addictive. If you liked the Day of Defeat mod for Counter Strike back in the day, or medal of honor, then you will LOVE Call of Duty. This game Definitely mixes the best of the old Counter-Strike-esque games and puts it all into one awesome package!

Modern Warfare 2 has received highly positive reviews from various gaming websites, attaining a 94% aggregate score on Metacritic, with praise stemming primarily from its in-depth multiplayer component. Upon its release, the game sold approximately 4.7 million copies worldwide in 24 hours.

2. Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

OMG This game is the very reason I purchased a Wii. If you played Ocarina of Time for the n64. Then this is the game you waited years for. I love all zelda games, and fell in love with Ocarina of Time. This game definitely did not let me down. So many afternoons.

Twilight Princess was released to universal critical acclaim and commercial success. It received perfect scores from major publications such as 1UP.com, CVG, Electronic Gaming Monthly, Game Informer, GamesRadar, and GameSpy. On the review aggregator MobyGames, it is one of the highest rated games of all time. On TopTenReviews, it has received an average score of 3.86 out of 4, the highest among all games in the Zelda franchise. In the PAL region, Twilight Princess is the best-selling Zelda game ever. During its first week, the game was sold with three of every four Wii purchases. The game had sold 4.52 million copies on the Wii as of March 1, 2008, and 1.32 million on the GameCube as of March 31, 2007.

1. Grand Theft Auto III

This game changed everything. It almost came out of no where with its awesome 3D Graphics that overcame its predecessor and allowed for almost unlimited possibilities in the game itself. Probably one of the Funnest games you could ever play without actually playing through the story. Just turning it on, and wreaking havoc was the most exhilarating experience you could have on your couch in a long time. All of the GTA games from there on out where fun, but this is the one that started them all. The Series even brought back some catchy songs from long ago, like flock of seagulls.

The game’s concept and gameplay, coupled with the use of a three dimensional game engine for the first time in the series, contributed to Grand Theft Auto III’s positive reception upon its release; it became 2001′s top selling video game and is cited as a landmark in video games for its far-reaching influence within the industry. GTA III’s success was a significant factor in the series’ subsequent popularity; as of 2008, five GTA prequels set before events in GTA III have been released. GTA III’s violent and sexual content has also been the source of moral panic and controversy

There you have it..

Well guys, Those are the best games from the past Decade, that will guarantee entertainment, and fun, throughout your entire holiday break. So why don’t you go crack open those old games, and give em a spin for memory sake. You will be revitalized and glad that you did.

Bye Bye Google Gears, HTML5 is the future!

Late last month Google announced to the world that it would be retiring the Google Gears platform, which gives you offline access to your Gmail and other popular Google Apps so that it has more of a ‘desktop’ experience, in favor of HTML5′s offline storage capabilities.

Google has said that Gears will continue to be supported for sites that already use it. However, they expect developers to use HTML5 for these features moving forward as it’s a standards-based approach that will be available across all browsers.

Google Goes Minimal

If you have gone to the google home page in the last month (http://www.google.com for those of you that just search from the browser and have forgotten the home page URL) you will notice that if you let the page load, and have your mouse cursor in up where the address bar is. All you see is what is in the image above, and then if you mouse into the page, everything fades in beautifully(With the power of Javascript!!)!

A Very small, but cool feature.

Google gets Real, Real-Time!

Earlier this week Google announced a new service that will offer streaming results for searches, incorporating real-time updates from web pages and social networking partners. It has in fact been implemented and so far it rocks, I discovered yesterday that you can Google someones twitter handle and get 4 or so of their latest tweets, and you can even delve into a larger list of their latest tweets! Great for people who have twitter blocked at work, you can still see what your favorite tweeps are up to! Check it out!

I am very excited to see where this will take us, as Google announced its partners will be Facebook, MySpace, FriendFeed, Jaiku and Identi.ca — along with Twitter. Real-Time Search is exciting, who knows what we will be able to do with all of this information aggregated into Google searches!

Google Chrome for Mac and Linux Announced!

Finally! I was a huge fan of Google Chrome on Windows, just because it was soooooo fast, and everything was so simple and clean, it just made browsing the web a joy. When I got my Macbook pro earlier this year I was saddened that it wasn’t available for mac! But that time has passed. Google Chrome is now Available to download for Macs running OSX 10.5 (Intel only), It’s also available for Linux!

Other exciting features added include the Chrome Extentions Page which has add-ons similar to Firefox! Woo!

ALSO – Google’s Bookmark Sync is now live! Basically what this does is it stores your bookmarks in your Google account, so you can access them on any computer, How awesome is that?? (Although Delicious does pretty much the same thing).

Well guys, that is the update! It probably took you more than 60 seconds, but it sure beats hunting for all that info yourself eh? Hope you enjoyed it! Now you should be all caught up with the new Google stuff (at least for this month )
